A helicopter crashed Thursday in a wooded area in St. John's but the two people on board survived, authorities say.

The pair were "alert and conscious" after the mid-afternoon crash off Kenmount Road, a major arterial leading into the city, said Const. Paul Davis of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.

There were few immediate details on the condition of the pilot and passenger. It also wasn't immediately clear who owned the helicopter.

They were flown separately by helicopter to the Health Sciences Centre, a few kilometres away.

"There were injuries, but no one knows the extent at this time," CBC Radio reporter Rod Etheridge said.

No smoke was visible from the crest of Kenmount Road, leading to Mount Pearl and Paradise, Etheridge said.

Eyewitness Robert Emberley told CBC News that he saw a low-flying helicopter dip, rise and then drop again at about 2:45 p.m. into a wooded area, where he assumed it then crashed.

Police were joined by crews with the St. John's Regional Fire Department. Some donned snowshoes to reach the crash scene.

A net was rigged to help convey at least one of the injured into a hovering helicopter.

Police closed Kenmount Road to traffic soon after arriving on the scene. They expected to open the arterial to traffic again late Thursday afternoon.
