matsgone Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 Alright, I am thinking about buying a helmet. First, Is that a good idea?? Is slinging with a helmet in an Astar a pain in the butt? I guess Gallet are the best option, anyone has a contact in where to buy??? Thanx! Quote
ridethesnow Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 Alright, I am thinking about buying a helmet. First, Is that a good idea?? Is slinging with a helmet in an Astar a pain in the butt? I guess Gallet are the best option, anyone has a contact in where to buy??? Thanx! Personally i think buying a helmet is a good idea... i have known of a few cases where they have saved a life... as far as slinging out of an astar goes, im not too sure how much of an inconvenience it would be... i use a gallet myself and like how light it is and the dual visors are good for sunny days or low vis, the hush kit seems to do the trick as well... but you definetly pay the price if u want to go with the full shabang on the gallet... retail hits almost 3 grand on the button... that was over a year ago.. im not sure if the prices have gone down at all since... i got mine from acro helipro out of langley bc... they usually have one or two in stock.. but if you are looking for a particular color they may have to bring it in... which was what i did and it took a longgg time to get it... all the best on your head bucket journey rts Quote
hookdangler Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 Alright, I am thinking about buying a helmet. First, Is that a good idea?? Is slinging with a helmet in an Astar a pain in the butt? I guess Gallet are the best option, anyone has a contact in where to buy??? Thanx! Buy a helmet! I personally know guys that are around today because the helmet saved their noodle and their lives. Also have save my noodle from a hard hit from an external load coming off the hook on a powerline construction job. You will find them quieter and that helps with the fatigue level during the long days of flying. Quote
Zazu Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 The bad thing about a helmet is you'll only need it once. The good thing about a helmet is you'll only need it once. Do the math and hopefully you'll spend a couple grande for something you'll never use. Get a lid. Period. Quote
splitpin Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 Lets put it this way. Get a five pound ball-peen hammer and ask you buddy to smack you on top of your head with it. Hurts like He-- doesn't it?? Now, put on a helmet and repeat the first test. Get the point?? PS- You can substitute the hammer with Helicopter door frame, instrument panel, cargo hook. or any one of a thousand other things that can bite you around a helicopter. Have a Good Day Quote
Winnie Posted April 11, 2007 Report Posted April 11, 2007 This is probably a amtter of opinion, and as history would have it, Opinions are just like a$$holes, everybody's got one... But I would refrain from buying a gallet, and rather go with an Alpha 200, or a Gentex SPH-5 or HGU-56 Slightly cheaper, and meets all the UK and US standards, and is used all over the world... Like I said, my opinion, and if I had the cash right now, it would go for a brand spanking new Alpha... Quote
collective Posted April 11, 2007 Report Posted April 11, 2007 Research has been done on this issue (as if it needs research). From what I can recall, the bottom line of the research paper stated that a full 80% of injuries/fatalities with regards to helicopter accidents, were head injuries. I cannot remember where that report is but I do believe it was done by some insurance body. In any event, (as they will say to the south) just axe yourself why all armed forces pilots in the world have them. Why those of us who are somewhat longer in the tooth do wear them for every flight. As was stated here prior "The bad thing is...You will only need it once". "The good thing is...you will only need it once". Alpha Eagle...a little getting used to at first (two weeks +-) but now that it is adjusted to fit my noggen....love it! my tupence worth. Quote
Auto Relight Posted April 11, 2007 Report Posted April 11, 2007 If you're already far along enough to be slinging in an Astar, I can't believe you're asking that question.... No offense, but it's pretty much a no brainer. Pardon the pun. AR Quote
kjw57 Posted April 11, 2007 Report Posted April 11, 2007 I wear one, because the statistics are in my favour if I ever need one. Got one from a company in Hartford Conn. their name escapes me at the moment. SPH 4B way less than from flight suits at the time around $700.00 Can. although that was a while ago. Hush Kit & liner from Oregon Areo, and recently CEP from CEP USA, the whole thing still cost me less than $1200.00 Can. Comfy Quiet & Affordable. Yeh it's probably heavier than an Alpha or Gallet but I haven't had any problems with my head in the bubble or out the door all day. Oh yeah Government Sales was the name of the company...Good luck with your hunt. Quote
matsgone Posted April 11, 2007 Author Report Posted April 11, 2007 Alright thanx a lot for all the answer. And man, auto Relight, you have to get laid, you cant go around like that pulling the smart *** ####...... I asked the question because I wanted to know what people who know better think about it.... Do yourself a favor and dont loose your time writing stuff like that. You know I once had a friend who was really ugly and he still managed to get a piece once in a while and it made him feel a whooooooooooooooole lot better!!!! Quote
