Rosco Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 Just wondering how many still "pack" as part of their personal or survival kit.
cap Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 At one time, there were many companies that had it as an option in their gear to be loaded for a summer's work in the Barren lands or Arctic. That was also in the days when leaving home in May and returning in the latter part mof August was the norm. Each a/c had it's pilot and they nevr parted, so the possible problems with transference of the weapon was nevr a proble. All of that has now been superceded by rules of one sort or another and doing so now is just too much of a hassle for the majority. I can say that I had one occasion where I was glad I had it for survival after being doen for 10 days in the middle of nowhere. Oh ya......and the weapon of choice seemed to be the .20 Ga./30-30 over 'n under. Very light, easily broken down and they were very common as far as finding them in retail outlets.......and CHEAP.
transquebecniece Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 I know you're polling Canadian pilots, Roscoe, with respect to personal carrying, but I'm hoping someone will answer just one question for me? Does Canada have an equivalent of our U.S. Federal Marshalls, who fly armed and undercover on commercial passenger flights, now. Just curious... AND BACK TO POLL
407 too Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 usually no need to, the timber cruisers i move around pack enough to defeat a small Peruvian army !!!
Rosco Posted February 18, 2005 Author Report Posted February 18, 2005 TQN, From what I understand the air marshall task in canada is delegated to the RCMP and only on select flights. Not so much on domestics but international/u.s. bound. R
FUDNUF Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 When I worked in the Artic and the Territories I always carried a weapon. It always seemed the helipads were past the generators and no one could hear your screams if some animal was lickin your skin off. The polar bear work I did in the Artic we carried a min of 3 weapons in the machine, one handy at every door. Polar bears are very sneaky creatures they get very close without you knowing.
twinstar_ca Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 i don't think anyone could forget the pics of what a polar bear did to one of OMNR's LR's a few years ago... if you work in the wilds, you need to be able to protect yourself..
twitch Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 Up until very recently I carried a handgun, with the proper permit of course. But the company that I work for has just rescinded their permission due to "political" pressure from people who wouldn't know a bear if it bit them in the ***! twitch
FUDNUF Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 Some of the contracts I was involved with required the crew to carry a weapon. The biologists I worked with carried 44 auto mags, hand canons.
Herman Nelson Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 12 ga. Marine Magnum with folding stock, fits nicely in the duffel bag, never leave home without it when going to the high arctic. I've seen too many polar bears eating critters that are bigger and faster than me...
