Freefall Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 In the US fire fighting helicopters are required to have P25 compliant digital FM radios installed by january. Has anyone heard any talk of having a similar requirement for operators in any of the Canadian provinces anytime soon? Quote
Over-Talk Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 I have not heard of a switch to P25 in Canada, and can find no information of such a change. The great advantage of P25 is the ability of different organizations being able to talk to each other. This involves a lot more than just being on the same frequency. The technical design of the radios involved must be the same. This is covered when all the radios are built to P25 standards. Due to the way jurisdictional lines are drawn (i.e. overlap!! ) in the US, the number of different groups working together on a forest fire in the US is enormous compared to Canada. Therefore, there is probably not a need to have all radios P25 compliant in Canada at this time. Quote
T-rex Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 Interesting, that said, the annual operators meeting with ASRD includes a component about digital radios? Not sure if anyone has met with them yet or not. We are not scheduled for another 3 weeks. Quote

pilot5 Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 I don't mind much what they change! As long as you can hook up a pair of rabbit ears its all good! Quote
Gary Watson Posted November 4, 2009 Report Posted November 4, 2009 Dig out your issues of Vertical Mag (self-promotion time) I did an article about P25 a while ago and talked to the Canadian regulators and was informed that they were aware of it, but at this time had no plans to mandate it in Canada. Having said that, nothing is for sure in this world Quote
whirlygig Posted December 9, 2009 Report Posted December 9, 2009 Yes Guys we will be required to upgrade to full digital FM radios by 2011 ........ Quote
chopperman Posted December 9, 2009 Report Posted December 9, 2009 At our annual meeting with Alberta forestry last week they said it is something they are moving towards but it will be 3-5 years before it will be a requirement. Quote
