N1
Hearing of lay-offs and uncertainty all over the business right now. Companies closing down, for sale and changing ownership. New owners and apparent uncertainty for the biggest operator in the world, with big management changes occuring and more to come. Is this the end of the cycle and the start of the next phase? WTF_was_that
Our Biz lives on Credit and most of our clients need it to function. With credit drying up the craziness could be over.

212wrench
Wait until all this beetle kill burns. Of course since the government will be paying to put it out, doesn't look good for the industry.

Rotorhead
Wait until all this beetle kill burns. Of course since the government will be paying to put it out, doesn't look good for the industry. The reason the beetle is killing all the pine is that the fires never get large enough to do what nature intended it to do (control the parasites and beetles). "Let it burn" would be the best solution, but uncontrolled will be disaterous for those downwind. The answer is not an easy one. Biologists say that historically, most of BC and AB were completely burnt by fires every hundred years. Technology such as Firecats and Bambi Buckets have altered that. Good for us, bad for the loggers in the long term. RH
Freefall
What different does it make if it burns or the beetles kill it? Either way its dead and either way it takes 80 years to grow mature again. It doesn't matter if its fires, insects, or disease, most pine and spruce dont live much longer than 100-125 years if it doesn't meet the saw blade before that anyway. Now the areas where the young crop tree's are getting whiped out by the beetles...thats a bit more worrisome. The beetle tree's are only an extreme fire hazard until the needles fall off which doesn't really take that long.

There are a lot of operational pilots out there that can answer this better than I but the fire would kill the beetle, germinate the cones and encourage natural regeneration. The past 50 year have seen an exponential growth in the Western Pine Beetle, carried by long distance trucking as well as high winds.
