INterested to read They are replacing the S76 with Agusta Machines ( I assume 139's ). When is STARS to receive the first of their ships ? . Are they still waiting for anti ice before they put them in service ?

As the existing contract with CHL expires in April 2009, Ornge is in the process of a Request for Information with Pricing for a rotor wing flight service provider.

“Ornge’s decision to purchase our own helicopters is an important step in fulfilling our

commitment to provide Ontarians with a world-class medical transport capacity”, said Dr. Mazza.

Great idea. Should be able to provide the same service for twice the money, providing ya got two to keep one serviceable. Oh well only tax payers money.

...as opposed to paying CHL top dollar for bagged out piece-of-sh_t SK76A models that are now starting to fall out of the sky

Does the AW139 have de-icing technology?

The first craft will not have de-icing technology, while the second AW139 will.

the above quote was copied from www.stars.ca

I don't think the 139 has received certification yet for flight in known icing conditions. I remember reading that Agusta was promising the availability of retrofit kits that operators could purchase once certification was achieved, and that all new aircraft delivered after certification would have de-ice.

In the case of STARS, I think they ordered their first 139 for delivery prior to expected de-ice certification, and the second one for delivery afterwards.

AgustaWestland is making several improvements to its AW139 medium twin, including flight-testing a de-icing system. Dubbed the full ice protection system (FIPS), the optional equipment is intended to earn the AW139 dual FAA/EASA certification for flight into known icing conditions. This milestone is expected late next year or during the first quarter of 2010.

Those STARS guys will be earning their pesos (of course they already are)...known icing, night, IFR, NVGs, landing where the cop deems to be safe...YIKES!
